How to make sure you

Don’t let School Interfere with Your Education

1. Read for pleasure now and then.

2. You don’t have to take a class to learn everything—just read the text or watch a video.

3. Try something fun—spend a semester in another country or a week in the desert.

4. Don’t procrastinate!! Stress will make you hate your education when it should be (at least a little bit) exciting! Have a little will power and learn how good it feels to postpone gratification!

5. Don’t worry too much about your grades. Better still, don’t worry at all. Work for them, yes, care about them, yes, but worry—no!

6. Don’t get too focussed. Learn a little about everything. You’ll be amazed to discover how much everything overlaps!

7. Study something you enjoy. Take a class just for fun or to develop a talent.

8. Don’t overdo it. Sometimes you have to stay up studying all night, but in general, keep some balance in your life! Don’t wait for some future date to enjoy yourself—make that habit now!

9. If you view college as a stressful time, one you won’t remember as a good time where you did new things and made life-long friends, then consider the possibility that you’re doing it all wrong! Get involved in extra-curricular activities—many employers will take this as much (or much more) into consideration as your GPA.

10. Make a few friends in your classes. Make it a habit to ask someone for the time (unless the clock on the wall works) or to borrow a piece of paper or pen early in the semester—even if you’ve got plenty (ready to loan out) in your back pack. Once you’ve talked to someone, it’s easier to do it again. You might end up in a study group or carpool or on a date having a great time or just running into friends at school softball games.

11. Don’t be afraid to talk to your profs. Most of them enjoy interaction with students. But do be aware of their time constraints at grading time and between classes.

12. Exercise and eat well! Take care of your body!! You’ll never feel good if you don’t!!

13. Clean your room! You’ll feel and work better. And do the dishes! Who cares if it’s not your turn! What are you so upset about? It’s not that big of a deal. If you have a good attitude, you win, and that’s the final word. If your roommates are lazy slobs, they lose and you should pity them and show a little compassion.

14. Call or write home now and then. Even if you don’t know it now, your family is a very important part of you.

15. Get a permanent e-mail account (try www.geocities.com or www.hotmail.com or www.rocketmail.com or www.iname.com or www.netaddress.com or www.excite.com or www.yahoo.com) so you can keep in touch with people you meet from now on. You’ll never know how important and fun it is to have friends who you've known and who have known you for ten or twenty years until you’ve done it. you can always make new friends, but it's tough to replace those really great ones!

16. Follow your bliss!!! Do what you love with your life. Don’t feel obligated to stay in a career you hate. Figure out a way into a career you love! Sure, 40 years ago any job was a luxury, but not any more—you have hundreds of choices. If you don’t know what you’d like to do, get on over to the testing center (I assume they have it) and take the Strong Interest Inventory—it’ll tell you all kinds of interesting stuff about yourself and point you in the right direction. You'll never be as successful if you don't do something you love.

17. Boy, these just go on and on!

18. Keep an open mind! Realize that you treat yourself the same way you treat others. Be accepting and kind and generous. It’ll all come back to you!

19. Use your influence to persuade government to take better care of our educational system! Each person who increases their education in our country will earn more money, pay more taxes, treat you better (well, most of them), and make your community a more pleasant place to live. Help that to happen! Vote for higher teacher wages to attract and retain quality educators—don't you sometimes wish someone would have done that before you went through school?

20. If you ever find yourself interested in something, learn something about it quick before the feeling goes away!! It’s amazing what you can do with your time if you develop this habit.

21. NEVER SAY YOU DON’T HAVE ENOUGH TIME AGAIN. Don't even think it! Just get busy doing what you like and what you need to get done. Use every day wisely. Don’t stress out about it—which usually just stops you from acting.

22. Stop waiting for that perfect opportunity before you try something—it’ll probably never come! On the other hand, if you get busy living and learning, opportunities will appear before you constantly. Go watch Groundhog Day for more inspiration on this. Day by day get busy becoming who you want to be and accomplishing everything you’ve ever dreamed of.

23. Be excited and enthusiastic about everything you do. Life is fun! Treat it that way.

24. Join the High Adventure Coalition or start a chapter at your school. You can actually get money from your school if you make it an official club.
